Holiday Cards Now Available at Minted!

One of my favorite parts of being a stationery designer is having the joy of Christmas in May. Yes, I said May. You may not realize just how much work goes into designing holiday cards every year, so trust me when I say it's a lot of work. As a designer, I'm thinking about the holidays all year round, and it's always SO much fun when Minted has their holiday challenges in the Spring. It's such a blast to play holiday music in warm weather with the windows open. My neighbors must think I'm crazy.

Anyway, I have two designs that will be for sale this year through Minted. Snowy Man is a fun, simple design featuring a little snowman and simple type.

I'm so excited that Snowy Man is now available, and if you're one of those super organized go-getter types that started buying presents last year, well now's a perfect time for you to start thinking about your holiday cards!

Winner Winner!

I recently got my very first Minted Winner star! Up until now, all of my designs for sale at Minted have won awards as Jury picks or Editor picks, which means that one of the special judges for a particular challenge picked my design to be sold. In the Thanks A Million challenge, I got my very first "winner" which means my design scored high enough that it landed in the top 20 for the entire challenge! How exciting!!

Here's the winning design, that will soon be for sale at Minted.

I'm looking forward to the launch of several new designs on Minted, once they are all available, I will certainly let you all know!

Recent Design Work - Oh, Hello!

Oh boy! It's been over a month since my last blog post - I'm contemplating reintroducing myself! Just kidding, hopefully you remember who I am ;)

If you've been following my blog for a long time, you might have noticed a trend where I really seem to back off blogging during the months of December and May - if you're wondering why, it's because that's the end of the school semester (don't forget, I go to grad school at night!) Towards the end of the semester my evenings are filled with school projects, papers, finals and registering for the next semester. Not much time for blogging.

But, just because I haven't been blogging doesn't mean my business has been idle. Believe Notes has been  launching new items, submitting to Minted challenges, and working on some wedding invitations to add to the shop. I have also been looking into new business adventures, and cannot wait to share some of the fun things that will be happening in the future.

Oh, and I've been buying fonts. Because, as I've said before, some girls buy shoes when they're stressed - but this girl buys fonts. Although, this past month has been a month of shoes and fonts - I guess that means I've been uber stressed??

Minted has been having challenge after challenge after challenge. It's been hard enough keeping up with that, let alone everything else going on! One recent challenge that I'm waiting to hear back about winners is the Cheers! Wedding Party Invitation Challenge. The designers were asked to come up with designs for engagement parties, rehearsal dinners, and bridal showers. Minted often has "special categories" for their challenges where they ask designers to design for a specific theme, and one of the special categories was for a tasteful lingerie shower. I always try to have a few submissions that cater to the special categories. So, without further explanation, here are the designs I submitted for the Cheers! challenge:

Hope you head on over to Minted and vote on the recent challenges! Your vote always counts, so head on over and tell Minted what to sell!

Minted Design Challenge - Deck the Office Business Holiday Card Challenge

I know, I know, it's only April! But it's Christmas in full swing over at Minted. As designers we have to start preparing for the holidays way in advance, so the Minted holiday challenges are always in late spring/early summer.

The most recent design challenge is the "Deck the Office Business Holiday Card Challenge" which had asked us designers to come up with some non-photo holidays cards that would be perfect for businesses to send to their clients. You can go vote on all (593!) of the fabulous designs here.

Please go and vote on my designs to tell me what you think of them. Here are my two submissions for this challenge:

I've always admired the designers that can use textures and colors in their designs. For some reason I always thought it was something I couldn't do, but a few weeks ago I started trying to learn the art. There's definitely a lot to learn, but I love the way these two designs came out! Hope you like 'em too!

Minted's Women's Stationery Challenge, Voting is Open!

Minted has certainly been keeping all of us in the design community on our toes lately! We've had challenge after challenge, and while I haven't been able to submit designs in all of the challenges, I was able to squeeze out a few submissions for the recent Take Note! Women's Stationery Challenge. It would be fantastic if you could take some time to go vote for all of the designs that you'd like to see for sale on the Minted site in the future.

Below are the designs that I submitted into the Take Note! Women's Stationery Challenge:

Cool Shades

Effortless

Vintage Monogram

I'd love if you could help get my designs for sale by voting on them!

Breakfast of Champions

My professional job is in helping to develop and grow strong leaders/managers, so most of what I hear every day is about how to help make people better with their interpersonal skills (because the higher you go in a company, the less you use your technical skills and the more you rely on interpersonal abilities). We use a lot of personality assessments in helping us when coaching executives and the whole point is to provide as much feedback as possible. Without feedback, nobody can truly get better.

Time and time again, I’ve found that the most successful managers and leaders are the ones that take feedback openly and objectively. Granted, there is an art to giving and receiving feedback, and not everybody has the knack for it, but it’s my job to give feedback in a constructive way, and it’s the receivers’ job to use it for growth. A good leader can take feedback and use it as a tool for becoming even better. They make goals for themselves based on that feedback and they develop from it.

There’s a phrase a bunch of the executives and I joke about, which we picked up from one of my coworkers – “Feedback is the breakfast of champions”.

Think about it.

Go ahead, think some more.

It’s true, isn’t it?

Sometimes in the morning if I’m riding the elevator with somebody I’ve coached, they’ll look at me and joke, “Hey Jackie, guess what I had for breakfast!”

So why did I give you that glimpse into my other career? Because I think it directly applies to designers as well. A lot of us designers don’t think we have a whole ton in common with big corporations, when really; we have a lot in common because at the end of the day, we are all people. Leaders and managers want to be successful, as do designers. Heck, who doesn't want to be successful! We all grow through constant feedback, and so one of the most valuable skills a person can have is being able to give and receive constructive feedback.

I don’t know about any of you, but 90% of my growth has been a direct result of the feedback I’ve gotten from others that were willing to give it to me.

And when it comes to giving feedback in the design world, Minted nailed it. They may not have done it intentionally, but man oh man, they nailed it. Before, I said that the most successful executives are the ones that are able to take feedback and grow from it, well the same is true of designers. Some of my most admired designers are the ones that maybe didn't start off super successful, but with enough effort they were able to turn the feedback into real opportunity for growth.

I'd also like to say that, as a professional in the world of business & Talent Development, some of the most well-said feedback I’ve ever seen has come from the Minted community. I teach classes on how to give feedback, I coach leaders and I study it on my spare time – so for me, it was amazing when I entered the Minted community and the designers were doing it so naturally and so well.

So, for those of us that still have growing to do, and for those of us that want to help grow other people, here are a few rules of thumb for giving feedback, many of which are demonstrated daily during Minted design challenges:
  1. Start by focusing on something positive. “I like the feel of this!”
  2. Be specific – don’t generalize. Instead of saying “this design is bad” say “the type is a little big”. Generalizations are bad because they don’t offer any substance. For somebody to actually improve, they need to know specifically what isn’t right. Even if it means listing several things, it’s better than generalizing and saying “everything”.
  3. Point out the effect of the “bad” thing, “I find the type is a little big, which can be distracting”
  4. Offer a suggestion, not a direct order “Have you thought about making the type smaller?”
  5. Use "I" statements. They take the sting out of suggestions. “I think it might look nicer if…” “I might try this instead” or “I find the type a little on the large side”. Don't use "you" statments, and never say something like “you need to change this” or “you need remove that”
  6. Be confident that the person will be successful. “This is going to turn out great! I can’t wait to see it”
  7. Follow up and offer additional feedback. “Wow, the changes you made look really nice!” or “I see you made the type smaller, and it’s looking much better, but I still might try to make it even smaller.
Avoid putting the other person down, being mean, calling them names, or calling their entire product awful. Feedback needs to be done in a positive constructive way so that the other person doesn’t become defensive. And if you give feedback properly (which the Minted community does) it’ll actually foster an environment where people actively SEEK OUT the feedback. Amazing, right?!

Can I also add that it’s really important to give feedback when somebody is doing something really well? Use all the tips I mentioned above, maybe say something like “Wow, this design is really great! I love the pop of color and the type layout, I wouldn’t change a thing! Hope this one wins!” I know that seems like a long way of saying you like something, but why not take the extra time to put a smile on somebody else’s face?!

So, speaking of all that, head on over to Minted and vote for the It’s Party Time: Children’s Birthday Party Invitation Challenge. I got to submit one design, and would love to hear some feedback!

Coming soon to Minted!

I'm giving it my darndest right now to keep up with all the design challenges going on over at Minted. I've had two designs picked from the last few challenges, which is pretty good considering I didn't enter many designs. You've already seen the "Sweet Hearts" birth announcement design, which should be for sale soon, and I just found out I also won an Editor's Pick for my "Smouldering" business card design!

"Smouldering" Business Card Editor's Pick
Minted also has just announced all of the Holiday Card winners, and my oh my, they are amazing! I had submitted two designs (there were a total of over 2,200 designs!) and neither were chosen, but I am actually happy about that because it means I can sell them in my Etsy shop this season. That's the beauty of Minted, even if you don't win, you still end up with lovely designs that are fit for sale. The design challenges are win-win!

The new wedding challenge is also open at Minted, and it's my mission to enter at least three designs. The talent is amazing, and while I have no plans on actually winning, I love submitting and getting feedback from such talented designers. Be on the lookout for my submissions!

My Second Minted Award!!

The winners were just recently announced over at Minted for the Summer is Born Birth Announcements and I snagged myself another Editor's Pick Award!!! Yippie!!!

My "Sweet Hearts" design was the winner, which I am actually a little surprised about because it scored much lower than one of my other designs. I suppose that's the beauty of an Editor Pick, doesn't matter what the score is, so long as the judges love it - so thanks judges!!!

Congrats to all of the winners, the designs/designers at Minted are AMAZING! I am so proud to be a part of the Minted community! Yay!!!
